The Celtic Manor Resort (Coldra Woods Course), South Wales in England
An official candidate venue for the 2009 Ryder Cup, The Celtic ManorResort is set in 1,400 acres of panoramic parkland at the gateway to Wales.
The 5 Star 400 room, 32 suite hotel serves as the luxurious starting point
for a complete golf and leisure experience.
In addition to the 2 superb health clubs and spa, 4 restaurants and
40 function rooms, the resort offers 3 very different and challenging
courses, all designed by the legendary Trent Jones family.
The par 72 Wentwood Hills course, venue of The Wales Open, has been described
as a "fantastic course in a fabulous location"(Seve Ballesteros)
and as "one of the most scenic in the world"(Sandy Jones).
The executive style Coldra Woods is challenging in its own right. A 4,001
yard, par 59 layout, it hugs the hillside and, as you would expect from
a Robert Trent Jones Snr. design, it is not to be taken lightly. As Richard
Simmons from Golf International Magazine commented "Coldra Woods
... has to be one of the best and toughest short courses in the UK".
The Romans had a say in the design of the course, with several holes passing
the site of a Roman gladiator camp. The course was the venue for a different
type of battle when it hosted the PGA West Region Short Course Championship
in 1999 and 2000.
