Helensburgh Golf Club Strathclyde in Scotland

Set in ideal golfing country this 18 hole par 72 course designed by
Seve Ballesteros and Dave Thomas offers a varied and stimulating challenge
to the golfer. Each hole meanders through the silver birches, firs, heaths
and heathers which are natural to this area of countryside. Without doubt
the most spectacular hole must be the 15th, aptly named 'The Waterfall',
which is set against a 40 foot rock face.
After golf, the facilities at Westerwood include a swimming pool, jacuzzi,
steam room, gymnasium, tennis courts and snooker. What more could the
discerning golfer need to help him unwind?
Helensburgh Golf Club was founded in 1893 as a 9 hole layout and subsequently
approved by Old Tom Morris. The creation of the second nine was completed
in 1905 and the present clubhouse was opened shortly afterwards in 1909.
A more recent event of note was the actual purchase of the course and
some additional ground in 1978. Improvements to the existing tees and
greens mean that the present day course is invariably in immaculate condition.
The course is moorland in character and affords fine views across the
Clyde estuary, plus a glimpse of Loch Lomond to the east. The club has
produced some excellent golfers: the most recent being European Tour player
Gary Orr, who has enjoyed a very successful year in 2000.
