Turnberry Golf Club, Strathclyde - Ailsa Course in Scotland
The Ailsa course at Turnberry has earned the rightful reputation asone of the very best links courses on the planet. The new Kintyre course,
formerly known as the Arran, will open for play in the summer of 2001
having been completely redesigned by renowned architect Donald Steel.
The year 2000 saw the opening of The Colin Montgomerie Links Golf Academy
at Turnberry, which completes this golfing utopia. Ailsa Course - "I believe
that Turnberry offers some of the best links golf in the world" states
Colin Montgomerie and few would argue with him. The Ailsa has played host
to three mesmeric British Open Championships, including the unforgettable
1977 'Dual in the Sun' between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus.
However, the course had to rise like a phoenix from the flames after
World War Two, during which Turnberry was equisitioned by the government
for use as an airbase. It was Mackenzie Ross who undertook the difficult
task of reconstruction and his creation is little short of golfing heaven.
Donald Steel remarked " there is no trickery or deceit....Mackenzie Ross
struck the perfect balance between what is challenging and what is unfair".
No golfers wish list is complete without a planned pilgrimage to this
mighty Ayrshire masterpiece.
